Respect can be defined as the feeling of deep admiration or regard for someone for their age, abilities, qualities, and/or achievements. While it is only Allah Almighty Who deserves all praise and admiration, Allah’s Rasool (ﷺ) teaches us to be respectful to elders and affectionate to the young. When you give respect to elders, they experience pleasure and have a good opinion of you. In addition, they pray to Allah Almighty for your success both in this life and in the world hereafter.

On the other hand, being disrespectful not only earns you bad reputation but also incurs the wrath of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala). It is because you are going against the teachings of the Holy Prophet (May peace and blessing of Allah be upon Him). When you follow the Rasool’s (ﷺ) commands, you are in fact obeying Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) as Allah says in the Noble Quran, “He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah; but those who turn away - We have not sent you over them as a guardian.” (4:80)

Sahih Hadith about Respect:

In Jami At Tirmidhi, Chapter: Righteousness and Maintaining Good Relations With Relatives, Hadees No. 1919, Allah’s Rasool (ﷺ) has been reported as saying that the one who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders is not one of us.

Whatever (good or bad) you do in your life, you will be paid back in the same coin either in this world or in the world hereafter. It implies that if you are respectful to the elders, you will also be respected as you reach the old age. If, owing to some Divine wisdom, you are not respected, the reward will be given to you on the Day of Resurrection.
