The instances of ordinary individuals making extraordinary achievements are very rare in the history of nations. However, the history keeps repeating itself.
A staunch proponent, advocate, practitioner, and promulgator of change, Imran Khan is one of such persons. The cricketer turned politician had to pass through decades-long turmoil and tribulations to reach the office of the premiership.
Catapulted to fame as the World Cup cricket champion, Imran Khan was previouslyknown to the West as merely a celebrity playboy. In the July 25 general elections, he made an even bigger achievement. His shot at becoming the prime minister is believed to be his best chance since entering the field of politics over two decades ago. Meanwhile, his contribution to the betterment of the country as an anti-corruption reformist is also significant.
It took Imran Khan over four decades to journey from the first wicket to the first cricketer-turned Prime Minister of the world’s sixth largest country by population.
It was July 25, 1974, when Khan played against England in the Leeds Test. The very next day, he got the first wicket of his career as a cricketer. As the history was set to repeat itself, July 25 of 2018 brought another great day in the life of the same person. But this time, the victory was of the much greater magnitude than the previous one.
Former India captain Kapil Dev congratulated Imran Khan over phone on his victory in General Election 2018 and expressed the hope that former Pakistan captain would continue to work selflessly for the prosperity of the country.
He said, “Well done young man! You’ve worked very hard for 20 odd years for the country and today you get the reward.” “It was not easy to lead the team like Pakistan. Because of Khan’s brilliant captaincy, Pakistan did well. I hope as Prime Minister he does the same for the country”, he added.
India’s former cricketer and televangelist Najvot Singh Sidhu was all praise for PTI chief Imran Khan on his glorious victory. Talking to an Indian News channel, he said, “I truly believe he (Khan) can take them (Pakistanis) to new heights.” He added, “He has got a pure soul and brings people together, the same way he’s brought the Pakistani society together”.
Now people both at home and abroad have high hopes that Khan will bring prosperity to the country through his sincere, selfless effort.
